OVERVIEW

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for an Editor III position within the department for Catholic Studies. This position has a full-time equivalency (FTE) of .625 or 25 hours per week.

Salary Range: $35,000 to $45,000

 

The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Editor is responsible for managing the marketing, design, production processes including copyediting and typesetting, scheduling, budgeting, and cost reporting for the academic journal Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture. The Editor ensures the journal meets high academic publishing standards and is promoted aggressively so that the journal can uphold its international reputation and remain self-supporting.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Manage the production process: set production schedule, copy editing; copyright and art permissions; review proofreading by authors and proofreaders; cover design.  supervise independent contractors in typesetting, proofreading, and outside design; manage printing, manufacturing process, and Project Muse relationships. Supervise and mentor CSMA students who serve as editorial assistants.  

 

Manage the submission process: receive and acknowledge submissions from authors through the online submission form; send manuscripts out for review; keep abreast of copyright and postal regulations; monitor agreements with other publishers, libraries, agencies. Develop publishing partners, including journal and ad exchanges, and complimentary subscriptions. Monitor all journal, postal, e-mail, and phone inquiries.

   

Responsible for marketing and sales, including web site design and development; digital and print ads; e-mail campaigns, database management, and table marketing at Center events and academic conferences. Work closely with the Associate Director of Catholic Studies and CSMA editorial assistant to accomplish these functions.   

 

Keep files and records for journal, including financial records, inventory, hard-copy, and electronic archives; assist editor in managing all budget, manage other office functions.  Manage and track revenue from subscriptions and advertising sales. Work with director of the Center for Catholic Studies and advisory board to determine other funding sources or advertising avenues.    

  

Provide event support that promotes the journal and provides educational opportunities related to the journal and the Center for Catholic Studies. Other writing and editing assignments (e.g., Lumen) and assistance with Center events and publications as requested by the Director and Associate Director of the Center for Catholic Studies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, writing, journalism, Catholic Studies, Theology, or a humanities field
  • Five years of administrative or project management experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of professional experience in writing and editing for a professional publication and/or an ability to quickly learn the Logos house style based on the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Enthusiasm for the work and purpose of the Center for Catholic Studies

An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.
