OVERVIEW

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for an Academic and Career Success Counselor position within the Dougherty Family College.

 

To best support our students and campus community, this role is designed as an on-campus position and will office out of our Minneapolis location.

Salary Range: $53,000-$63,000 annually, plus an additional adjunct contract of about $6,000 annually. 

 

The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Academic and Career Success Counselor works with scholars throughout their two years at DFC providing academic and career development support and student success initiatives as part of the Student Life team. The Academic and Career Success Counselor provides support and information for students regarding employment, developing resumes, cover letters and interviewing. The Academic and Career Success Counselor also develops and delivers content designed to improve academic skills and increase curricular and co-curricular engagement, including teaching the First-Year Experience (FYEX) course for DFC. The Counselor collaborates with faculty to establish individual and group academic plans for student academic success. The Counselor provides one-on-one support and development of educational goals for students who are struggling or need additional support. The Academic and Career Success Counselor coordinates and manages the Summer Enrichment Program, a required program for incoming DFC scholars intended to support the transition to DFC, with the Assoc. Dean of Students. The Academic and Career Success Counselor’s work reflects a demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

This is a 12-month position.

 

1. Career Success: Provide career counseling to assist students with clarification of educational goals and career selection, including guidance on career pathways.

  • Support the Professional Internship Program Director with the Professional Development Course, to provide career preparation and enhance professional skills
  • Offer career exploration services through skills and values assessments, career mapping and individual plans
  • Support students individually to create and improve resumes and professional portfolio items
  • Assist scholars search, application, and hiring processes for jobs and internships
  • Promote UST student worker positions and assist students with navigating the application process
  • Provide support to scholars participating in the DFC professional internship program
  • Annually survey students and implement improvements to the career success offerings
  • Assist alumni with preparing materials to be presented to various networks
  • Provide one-on-one support as needed for all students

2. Academic Success: Provide academic counseling to assist students with development of educational goals.

  • Implement academic advising strategies (syllabus, Individual Education Plans, etc.) and assist students with achievement of career objectives
  • Provide academic support for students retaking courses
  • Provide support to scholars in securing appropriate accommodations from Disability Resources
  • Aid and support in managing the Academic Care Alert process with the DFC Student Life team
  • Outreach to scholars on academic alert and probation and encourage them to access additional support services

3. Student Success: Contribute to the identification, analysis, and assessment of student success outcomes.

  • Teach First-Year Experience (FYEX) course for all first-year DFC scholars
  • Work with DFC Student Life team to design and evaluate co-curricular learning goals/outcomes and identify strategies to achieve them
  • Inform students of policies and procedures, degree requirements and how to be a successful student
  • Develop, deliver, and assess strategies designed to help students improve skills and academic success
  • Collaborate with mentors and faculty to establish individual and group plans to address skills needed for improvement for students to achieve academic success
  • Work with students to improve their skills and usage with Canvas, Outlook and OneStThomas
  • Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and college departments to identify, define, and meet student academic planning and career search needs, including setting student success goals and objectives
  • Co-manage the Professional Mentor Program with Assoc. Dean of Students and Operations Manager

4. Summer Enrichment Program Coordinator & Student Life Support: Support and contribute to the day-to-day management of programming at Dougherty Family College.

  • Assist Assoc. Dean of Students with Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) development and execution
  • Collect and maintain accurate student records for reporting purposes while maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Oversee special student engagement programs, retention projects and student life related activities as needed
  • Assist Associate Dean of Students with planning Student Life events and celebrations
  • Manage DFC student life Canvas sites (SEP and Student Support)
  • Plan and implement DFC student service projects throughout the year; creating a variety of ways scholars can serve and give back to the community
  • Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Advisor – recruit members; organize service projects and team building activities; hold monthly chapter meetings; and help members strengthen leadership skills
  • Work with the Life Skills Counselor and the Center for the Common Good to plan, operate and promote the monthly Tommie Food Shelf and weekly Kitchen Coalition meal giveaway on Minneapolis Campus
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • Co-Coordinates the Academic Early Alert Intervention Program

Student Success 

  • Teach First-Year Experience course to DFC scholars. Contribute to the identification, analysis, and assessment of student success outcomes

Summer Enrichment Program Coordinator & Student Life Management 

  • Coordinates the intensive Summer Enrichment Program. Support and contribute to the day-to-day management of Student Life programming at DFC

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a closely related field
  • Three years of experience in academic advising, career planning and employment services, preferably in higher education

An equivalent combination of education an experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing direct academic and career counseling to students (or similar constituents)
