Salary Range: $58,345 to $70,000

 

The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Post-Award Financial Specialist (Accountant II) is responsible for the day-to-day financial management

and accounting operations of sponsored research programs at the university. This position ensures proper

financial administration of sponsored projects while working collaboratively with compliance personnel to

maintain regulatory adherence. This position reports to the Research Compliance & Financial Manager.

This position is eligible for hybrid work after initial training. The department typically works 2-3 days per week in

the office and the remaining days remote. Remote work must be conducted in the State of Minnesota.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Award Management

  • Establish and maintain financial accounts for sponsored projects
  • Process financial transactions including purchases, reimbursements, and salary charges
  • Monitor expenditures against approved budgets
  • Implement budget modifications and no-cost extensions
  • Assist principal investigators with financial planning and budget management

Financial Reporting and Billing

  • Prepare and submit accurate financial reports to sponsors
  • Generate invoices for sponsored projects and track payments
  • Reconcile financial discrepancies and resolve billing issues
  • Maintain detailed documentation to support financial transactions
  • Ensure reports meet sponsor requirements and deadlines

Cash Management

  • Process drawdowns from federal payment systems
  • Record and reconcile cash receipts
  • Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding payments
  • Prepare cash flow projections for sponsored projects

Award Closeout

  • Prepare final financial reports and invoices
  • Ensure all project expenditures are properly recorded and reconciled
  • Process final transactions and close financial accounts
  • Archive award documentation according to retention requirements

Other

  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Director of Research

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Two years of professional experience in Accounting, Finance, and/or sponsored program roles

  • Knowledge of accounting principles and financial management

An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.
