OVERVIEW

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Facilities Supervisor – Recycling/Waste position within the Facilities Management Department. 

 

We anticipate this position to work a schedule of Tuesday-Saturday, with preferred hours being 7:30am - 4:00pm. This position also has an on-call rotation with other facilities staff being on-call approximately once every 7 weeks.

Salary Range: $52,920 to $59,997

 

The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

 

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Facilities Services, the Facilities Services Supervisor is responsible for the coordination of the work activities and supervision of assigned Building Service Workers and student employees as hired by the Facilities Department. The supervisor establishes daily priorities for the team based on operational needs, focusing often on the waste streams and communicates any necessary adjustments. The supervisor ensures that the established standards of cleanliness are maintained through routine quality assessments. The supervisor will provide support to Central Receiving operations in absence of Receiving, Supply and Moving Services Supervisor.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Facilities Services to coordinate waste operations, cleaning activities, quality inspections and project work. Provide updates (verbal and written reports) as requested. Communicate daily with other supervisors to coordinate shift-cleaning activities, project work, and event support. Detailed daily communication on the completion statuses are needed during shift transitions.
  • Work with the Assistant Director of Facilities Services in managing waste collecting sites and vehicles; providing appropriate supply of cleaning materials, receptacles, equipment, and other necessary items to ensure the proper performance for the needs of the waste operations; and collecting and recording waste and recycling data.
  • Establishes daily priorities based on business needs and available workforce and communicates adjustments to the staff and student staff. Coordinate with team of peer supervisors for substitute work force, provide training to staff and student staff, and take appropriate action to support the team of high demands of service for events, service projects, or task support.
  • Communicate with Building Service Workers daily (rounding) to determine their performance, quality of work, productivity and supply needs. Document and provide progressive, corrective action to employees when needed. Approve/deny Paid Leave Time (PLT) requests. Document safety reports as needed and quality assurance inspection reports on Building Service Worker staff on an established frequency or in response to a concern.
  • Responsible for meeting departmental staffing objectives by orienting, training, and coaching on procedures, practice changes, equipment, or products. Conduct and collaborate on staff meetings when necessary.
  • Ensure customer service requests (event set-ups) are completed in a prompt, accurate and professional manner, including appropriate waste management systems for events or projects are in place/removed as needed. Assist in the coordination of major University events such as graduation, Christmas parties and dinners, President's dinner, homecoming, etc.
  • Provide assistance in reporting requests for service via work order system. Check to ensure staff have necessary tools and equipment in proper working condition.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three years or more of experience supervising waste operation/cleaning teams
  • Experience with operational management of various waste streams

  • Experience with, or the ability to learn, vehicles used in the waste operations and receiving operations; box truck, 2-person ATV w/trailer, forklift

  • Driver’s License

In lieu of supervisor experience, a Bachelor’s degree is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising unionized employees
  • County Recycling/Composting Waste Ambassador certification (or able to obtain within one year of hire)
  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree
