Salary Range: $21.00 - $23.00 per hour

The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

 

 

JOB SUMMARY

The nature of the position is to assist Dr. Marsh managing a research lab with many parallel projects as well as the undergraduate research students who work on those projects. The purpose of the job is to manage various cell lines, manage protein hydrolysate inventory, keep the students safe and the lab clean, assist in coordinating student lab work, help students by answering questions concerning research projects, and carry out preparative and analytical tasks. The person must also order chemicals and biologicals for lab and is responsible for safe disposal of biological and chemical waste. This position requires the person to have two courses in organic chemistry, one course in analytical chemistry, one course in microbiology, two courses in biochemistry and at least 2 years of laboratory experience in biochemistry and cell culture. The person should be familiar with biochemical and microbiological research techniques and terminology. The person should be proficient in buffer preparation, sterile media preparation, aseptic technique (BSL1 and BSL2 level), mammalian cell culture techniques, instrumental methods like spectrophotometry, fluorometry, HPLC, and SDS-PAGE. The person should be familiar with the work up the data and its statistical analysis and graphical presentation using RStudio software. The person must have strong organizational and communication skills.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Development, growth and maintenance of microbial, insect and mammalian cell lines used in research projects. Assess integrity of cell lines while they are actively growing, monitor cryogenically stored cell lines and validate integrity of stored cell lines. Analysis of media performance/cell line performance including statistical modeling, protein, pDNA and metabolite yields.
  2. Run instrumental analysis of protein hydrolysate samples including SDS-PAGE, HPLC, total C and N as well as other methods as needed.
  3. Coordinate the activity of 4-5 student researchers in group experiments. Assist in training students in basic laboratory procedures and techniques. Assure that all students follow standard operating procedures, safety rules and regulations.  
  4. Order and track chemicals, biological organisms and track all wastes in lab.
  5. Write bi-weekly research reports including statistical modeling and analysis of growth experiments.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA or BS in Chemistry or Biochemistry
  • One year of professional work involving media preparation and development, cell culture, protein purification and nucleic acid purification
