OVERVIEW

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Network Engineer or a Senior Network Engineer position within Innovation and Technology Services.

 

Through this one job posting, we are hiring TWO individuals: one at a Network Engineer level and one at a Senior Network Engineer level. Many of the job duties and essential functions are similar in nature, with the Senior role being at a leadership and decision making level.

Salary Range:

Network Engineer: $76,280 to $82,400

Senior Network Engineer: $84,100 to $92,700

 

The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Network Engineer will contribute to the design, maintenance, and support of the wired and wireless network, voice, and video infrastructure at St. Thomas. This position requires strong problem-solving, organizational, analytical, and communication skills to ensure reliable and secure network operations. The Network Engineer will work closely with Senior Network Engineers and other team members to implement best practices, troubleshoot issues, and support the university’s academic and business needs.

 

This position will serve as a technical resource on projects for both on-premises and cloud-based networking environments.  The position will build and maintain collaborative relationships with St. Thomas academic/business units, external vendors, and other departments within ITS. 

 

The Senior Network Engineer will provide architectural guidance, design, and technology leadership using best practices for the wired and wireless network, voice, and video infrastructure architecture at St. Thomas.  The person in this position will demonstrate leadership, problem solving, organizational, analytical, and communication skills.  Additional responsibilities include escalated troubleshooting and incident resolution, network engineering and configuration, coordination of upgrades and changes, migrations and installations as the business requires, follow-through on assigned project tasks and ownership of issues in need of resolution. 

 

This position will serve as technical lead on projects, provide direction and leadership in determining technical architecture for both on-premises and cloud-based networking environments, and build and maintain collaborative relationships with St. Thomas academic/business units, external vendors, and other departments within ITS. 

 

Both of these positions are responsible for 24X7 support of systems and services. Some on-call and/or network emergency duties may be required.  Both positions work on-site, mainly on the St. Paul campus. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF NETWORK ENGINEER/SENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER 

Contribute to/provide network design and architecture in partnership with stakeholders and ITS Operations groups: 

  • Contribute to/develop and promote technology roadmap for University of St. Thomas wired and wireless networks and telecommunications infrastructure. This includes:
    • Logical address space / DHCP
    • Name space / DNS
    • IP Address Space Management / NAT
    • Logical zoning to reflect network trust levels
    • Layer 2 / Layer 3 redundancy
    • Routing / switching
    • VPN / remote access
    • Effective monitoring and alerts
  • Participate in/lead engineering efforts to develop technology pilots, proof of concepts, and where appropriate, full production rollouts.
  • Using best practices assist with development of/develop designs and proposals for potential adoption at St. Thomas. 
  • Work with key stakeholders, customers, senior leadership and other ITS teams to identify both technical and business requirements for specific initiatives. 
  • Drive greater efficiencies, adaptability, and improvements to the network through increased automation and network intelligence.
  • Establish and maintain key academic/business and vendor relationships 

 

Maintain and assist with/configure the University’s large and diverse network.  Participate in/coordinate upgrades and changes, open work tickets, monitor network health.

  • Maintain and support/set up on-premises and cloud solutions working with application vendors and providers and St. Thomas stakeholders 
  • Document processes, service levels, systems and inventory; update and refine as necessary in support of continuous improvement 
  • Seamlessly adapt to facility-specific systems across a wide array of network devices and layouts
  • Create and maintain network documentation:
    • Physical topology
    • Logical topology
    • IP segment / zone topologies
  • Establish and maintain monitoring and service metrics to ensure that systems and support processes meet customer needs.
  • Coordinate with ITS peers to ensure resolution of reported issues
  • On-call responsibility and participation in Change Management events outside of regular business
  • Keep network devices up to date with the latest IOS, firmware, OS

 

Be proficient with and follow the ITS Project Management process

  • Serve in technical lead and/or consultative role

 

Be proficient with and follow ITS procedures for communication updates and guidelines, incident and problem tracking, installation and inventory, and knowledge base.

 

Remains current on information about higher education and technology industry trends. 

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, management or a field related to the work
  • THREE years (Network Engineer) or FIVE years (Senior Network Engineer) of professional experience with infrastructure/enterprise systems and support, including, but not limited to:

    · Routing: Static, OSPF, BGP

    · Switching: Cisco, HSRP, VLANs, VTP, Spanning-Tree, 802.1x

    · Wireless:  Cisco, Cisco ISE

    · Perimeter: Palo Alto, A10 Thunder CGN

    · VPN: Palo Alto GlobalProtect

    · IPv4 and IPv6

    · Video: Network Device Interface for in-venue and external productions

    · Audio - Dante Domain Manager and Dante Audio Routing for settings ranging from classroom to stadium settings

    · Microsoft Visio

    · Project management

    · Change management

An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a higher education/instruction institute is preferred but not required. 
  • CCNA, CCNP in Routing/Switching, Wireless, or Design, Network +, ITIL Foundation certifications are highly desired.
