OVERVIEW

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for an On-Call Multilingual Graduate Student Writing Specialist position within the Morrison Family College of Health.

 

This is a remote position, working on-call, between 2 and 10 hours per week, while classes are in session.  Though this is a remote role, the successful candidate must reside in MN, IA, IL, or WI.

Salary Range: $20.45 to $27.00 an hour

 

The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Morrison Family College of Health is seeking a writing specialist to provide support for graduate students enrolled in programs across academic disciplines in the Morrison Family College of Health. This position will provide tutoring for a broad range of writing, including assigned papers, laboratory reports, research papers, master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, personal statements and statements of purpose for scholarships for graduate students, Writing Specialists also work independently creating materials and resources that directly address the writing concerns of students, especially those who are multilingual.  This is a remote position, working on-call, between 2 and 10 hours per week, while classes are in session.  This is a remote position; however, the successful candidate must reside in MN, IA, IL, or WI.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Support diverse, master-and doctorate-level students utilizing the Morrison Family College of Health Graduate Writing Center, including tutoring master- and doctorate- level graduate students via video conferencing.  Provide tutoring, and support students learning to interpret assignments, utilize APA format, apply rubric evaluation tools, and self-reflect upon their writing within the context of their coursework and broader graduate studies. Provide instructive feedback on scholarly writing components to include relevance, clarity, style, and mechanics, often working in extended tutoring sessions with multilingual learners.  Consult with the Student Success Director and faculty as needed.

  • Develop educational and training materials (handouts, worksheets, videos, etc.) related to scholarly writing and APA style for diverse learners at all levels of writing competency, with specific materials for multilingual learners. Materials may be presented as self-guided handouts, live workshops, and/or asynchronous learning modules.   Consult with the Student Success Director and faculty as needed to modify materials to meet College and program needs.

  •  

    Support the operations of the MFCOH Graduate Writing Center through recordkeeping, managing the writing support email and appointment scheduling system, participating in staff meetings, responding to communications in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in TESL, ESL, ELL or similar qualifications/certification
  • Three or more years’ experience teaching or tutoring ELL students at the college level
  • Experience working with both international and domestic multilingual students in writing
  • Must have extended knowledge of APA style formatting
  • The successful candidate must reside in MN, IA, IL, or WI

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting multilingual graduate students and a doctoral degree are strongly preferred
  • Experience or education in health care is highly desired

Special Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

Knowledge: Working knowledge of video conferencing platforms supported at St. Thomas and Microsoft Office 365 products. 

 

Skills and Abilities: Illustrates strong graduate level writing ability.  Exhibits excellent communication skills.  Ability to work independently. Endorses writing as an iterative and developmental process. Demonstrated cultural responsiveness and compassion for others’ experiences as people and as learners.
