    The Academic Dean provides administration and leadership for the academic programs and staff of The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity.  The Academic Dean is a full-time position that reports to the Rector/Vice President and is responsible for the following:

    • Administer all academic programs and policies of The Saint Paul Seminary and The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity.  In consultation with the Rector/Vice President, provide for the collaborative development of the strategic direction of The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity academic programs, (credit earning activities), for academic excellence, continued growth and professional success.  Supervise and coordinate the activities of program directors and advisory committees for both seminarian and lay students.   Collaborate with program directors on the appointment of faculty to serve on comprehensive exam committees and as thesis or internship advisors. Oversee the design, planning, and delivery of academic curricula.   Manage course selection, scheduling, enrollment, and evaluation, (including the administration of student course evaluations).  
    • Evaluate the academic preparedness and the educational credentials of incoming students.  Participate in admission interviews and deliberations of admissions committees.  Monitor the academic progress of students in all academic programs; direct and assist as needed with the assessment of student achievement and student deficiencies.  Review and revise as needed the academic policies of the SPSSOD, ensuring consistency and agreement with complementary policies of the University. 
    • Ensure the consistent and appropriate administration or enforcement of academic policies. Update and maintain accuracy of academic catalogues, policy manuals, and all online material pertaining to academic programs.  Coordinating with the Director of Institute for Diaconate Formation, (IDF), administer the academic components of the IDF.  Develop, supervise, and evaluate annually the teaching faculty including adjunct faculty.  Monitor the quality and performance of the faculty and their methods of instruction with special regard to the integrated approach to teaching from the PPF and the Ratio Fundamentalis.
    • Support faculty’s ongoing development:  their research, scholarship, and professional activity.  Administer funds for professional development.   Recommend faculty for sabbaticals.  Appoint faculty to selected committees and projects.  Provide annual evaluations of teaching faculty and process faculty contract renewals including recommendations for merit pay raises as warranted.  Recruit adjunct faculty as needed and manage the issuance of adjunct contracts.  Evaluate all non-tenure track faculty that report to the Academic Dean. Recommend the appointment tenure and promotion of faculty members to the Rector/Vice President, who shall then make recommendations to the President of the University through the agreed upon procedures.
    • Assess short-term and long-term faculty staffing needs in collaboration with the Faculty Affairs Committee and make recommendations to the Rector for faculty appointments.  Supervise faculty searches and hiring.  Collaborate with the Faculty Affairs Committee on the 3rd year, 6th year, tenure promotion, and post-tenure reviews of all tenured/tenure-track faculty. Make recommendations on matters of tenure and promotion to the Rector.  Recommend candidates for emeritus status upon retirement.  Advocate on behalf of SPSSOD faculty with the University and its administration. 
    • Collaborate with faculty on program planning, evaluation and assessment.   Ensure appropriate and ongoing assessment of academic programs.  Prepare annual reports of assessment results. Guide academic program development and curricular revisions.  Engage in long-range planning and the development of new program initiatives. Ensure compliance with ATS accreditation standards and HLC criteria.  Ensure the accuracy of all data maintained and reported to the accrediting agencies.  Submit reports and information as requested or required to maintain accreditation.
    • Collaborate with the director of finance to develop the budget related to academic areas and oversee its implementation.
    • Recommend to the President of the University of St. Thomas candidates or academic degrees and graduate-level certificates.  Monitor students’ progress toward the completion of all degree requirements.   Recommend candidates for the conferral of degrees and certificates.
    • Additional responsibilities:  Serve as a liaison to the University, its administration and other departments and schools of the University on academic matters and other concerns.  Supervise and evaluate the work of administrative assistants to the Academic Dean, faculty support staff, the records and registration coordinator, and the recruitment coordinator.  Ensure the planning and execution of lay student orientation activities.  Participate in academic portions of seminarian orientation.  Collaborate with program directors and other SPSSOD staff to improve student retention.  Collaborate with SPSSOD staff on the production and distribution of promotional materials.  Support and guide as appropriate the work of the director of the Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library.   Plan and coordinate faculty workshops and in collaboration with the Rector and his administrative staff faculty business meetings throughout the academic year.  Oversee the intellectual formation and coordinate advising for seminarians and lay students.  Plan and/or contribute to events that further the educational mission of the seminary, for example the Ireland Library Lecture Series, etc.   Assist faculty with the development and execution of study-abroad programs.  Oversee the administration and dispersal of student financial aid.  Advise and counsel individual students on academic matters.  Serve as an academic advisor to selected students.  Participate in the formation evaluation process for seminarians, particularly concerning their academic progress.  Plan and Promote ancillary programs or events that enhance the students’ intellectual, personal, and spiritual formation.
    • Committee Assignments: Seminary: Administrative Staff, Faculty Affairs Committee, Graduate Studies Committee, Master of Arts in Theology Advisory Committee, Master of Arts Pastoral Ministry/Master of Arts in Religious Education Advisory Committee, Master of Divinity Advisory Committee and/or Implementation Committee, Admission Committees (seminarian and lay), Formation and Program Development Committee of The Saint Paul Seminary Board of Trustees, Minnesota Consortium of Theological Schools Executive Committee, Minnesota Consortium of Theological Schools Board of Directors.  University: Deans Council, Provost’s Cabinet, President’s Cabinet, University Learning Assessment Committee.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Ph.D. or terminal degree, U.S or foreign equivalent, in theology, divinity, religious studies, or a field related to the work
    • Seven years of successful teaching experience at the graduate or undergraduate level, of which at least three years have included experience serving as an academic administrator in higher education
    • An active Roman Catholic with demonstrated fidelity to the Church. This appointment is subject to ecclesiastical approval by the Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
