    JOB SUMMARY

    The assistant dean of students is a key contributor to a dynamic Dean of Students team that is committed to the mission and convictions of the University of St. Thomas. This person is the lead case manager for students of concern and works closely with staff and faculty across the university to support at-risk students. The assistant dean works with academic deans in response to student behavioral concerns in the classroom. The assistant dean also responds to student complaints and concerns, advocates for students, and facilitates conflict resolution and mediation with appropriate individuals. This position serves on the Proud to Be First committee and coordinates monthly workshops and social events for first generation students at St. Thomas.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Initiates action or follow-up on calls/alerts from students, faculty, or staff that require advocacy or emergency response
    • Facilitate restorative justice and educational responses to bias incident reports
    • Coordinates monthly workshops for first generation students
    • Serves with “on call duty” responsibilities for evening and weekend emergency response to students. Response action may include contact with upper administrators, Public Safety, faculty members, or staff.
    • Co-chair the University FLAG Team (Behavioral Intervention Team) and case manage at-risk undergraduate and graduate student population.  Weekly meetings with team members are required
      • Follow-up and support for students whose behavior indicates they are having difficulty either in the classroom, social environment or residence hall
      • Coordinate family support meetings when appropriate
    • Initiate or respond to calls from parents or guardians of students who require supportive response and/or advocacy
    • Create the monthly electronic newsletter for parents and guardians
    • Assist with creation and implementation of parent summer orientation program
    • Assist with disciplinary processes for undergraduate and graduate students and serve in the process advisor role for sexual misconduct cases
    • Other administrative duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field
    • Five years of experience in student life/student affairs in higher education to include experience dealing with judicial affairs, university disciplinary systems, restorative justice practices, conflict resolution and mediation

    Preferred Qualifications 

    • Master’s Degree in Higher Education Student Personnel Development, Student Affairs, Social Work, Counseling, Pastoral Studies or an equivalent in human services
    • At least three years of experience with case management, student conduct, and emergency crisis response
    • Competence with student database management systems
    • Knowledge of Outlook, Lyris, and other software systems

    An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.
