    JOB SUMMARY

    This position serves faculty and staff by developing, leading, supervising, and managing all university run international programing. This position also manages OSA staff assigned to this area, and supervises the peer advisor student employees. As well, this position is responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of approved partner organizations, (programs operated by other universities or provider organizations that are approved for UST student participation),

     

    The Associate Director collaborates with the SIO providing emergency/crisis response as required and shares 24 hour on-call responsibilities. S/he also works with the SIO to develop, integrate and enhance education abroad programs across the curriculum, and to promote intercultural learning through engagement with other St. Thomas international program offices, various campus committees and events, and professional organizations affiliated with the global education industry.

     

    About the Department

    The Office of Study Abroad (OSA) of Global Learning and Strategy is the University of St. Thomas’s comprehensive resource for global education programs, and whose broad mission is to provide integrated academic and intercultural off-campus learning experiences. OSA staff work with over 2,000 undergraduate and graduate St. Thomas students planning to, studying on and returning from credit-granting programs around the world annually. The OSA also manages multiple advising and enrollment cycles simultaneously from prospective student to alumni status, and develops and facilitates short-term and semester programs in collaboration with program directors, academic and administrative departments and external national and international organizations. While its core responsibility is for credit-granting programs, OSA staff also facilitate the risk, liability, health and safety of all university student, faculty, and staff off-campus travel activity.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Provide leadership, management and oversight to the university’s education abroad programs and staff as they relate to university employees, including all duties, functions, assigned-staff evaluation, and budgets.
    • Develop and assess a strategic plan including program development, organizational development and interface with university globalization efforts. With the SIO, identify and recruit, as needed, faculty and staff program directors. Provide emergency/crisis response as required and share 24-hour on-call responsibilities.
    • Provide oversight, and with assigned staff, manage university sponsored semester and short-term programs and “Other Approved Programs,” needed site visits, out-bound UST employee visas, budget management, program director applications, selection, and training. The Associate Director assures excellent client response by their team.  Liaise with associate deans and department chairs, faculty directors and on-site partners to deliver programs.
    • With assigned staff, lead, plan and manage a portfolio of Approved Partner Organizations (“Other Approved Programs”). Collaborate with academic departments to identify new co-sponsored programs that are appropriate in terms of curriculum, destination, reputation, rigor, and on-site support logistics and services. Develop advising resources for both faculty and students. Liaison with partner representatives. Provide emergency/crisis response as required and share 24-hour on-call responsibilities.
    • Lead staff members in diversity and inclusion initiatives, including partnering with the Diversity and Inclusion Office on scholarships, programming and recruitment.
    • Participate in external outreach, networking, and professional engagement activities. Attend local, regional and national conferences. Keep up-to-date on current knowledge and trends in the field of education abroad.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
    • Five years of program/office management experience

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in a relevant field
    • Experience working in higher education in a study abroad office
    • Experience either studying or traveling abroad

    Any equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.
