Overview

The University of St. Thomas invites qualified candidates to apply for a Senior Art Director position within the Marketing, Insights and Communications Department.

 

University of St.Thomas is looking to hire a Senior Art Director/creative designer to join our internal creative team. The ideal candidate should be able to design within brand guidelines while bringing fresh creative ideas into the fold. The candidate will need to be a creative thinker and strong designer with proficient communication and organizational skills, along with the ability to quickly adapt to increasing workflow and process changes.

 

This highly creative role lives within the Creative Department and reports to the Creative Director. Candidates will be expected to develop all types of marketing communications within the family of brands, while executing each brand’s creative look and feel, along with the over-arching creative strategy. The role also requires collaboration with other designers, copywriters, marketing coordinators, managers and outside vendors. As a hard-working, "hands dirty" in-house marketing department, this role deals with every type of design project small to mammoth, including advertising, promotional materials, trade show signage, environmental design, sales and marketing collateral, editorial layout and everything in-between. Our department goal is quite simple – continually strive to elevate our brands with strategic and stellar creative initiatives.

 

Essential Functions:

1. Creative/Design/Conceptualization:  Conceptualizes, designs, and produces creative layouts in a wide variety of styles that adhere to the brand guidelines.  Delivers presentations to the team and/or senior personnel as needed.  Articulates rationale behind design ideas.  Exhibits expertise on all design trends and historic design influences.  Effectively presents ideas, both verbally and visually, to the Creative Director and team.

 

2. Execution: Executes creative vision with multiple concepts and directions to the Creative Director.  Creates effective and highly visual presentation/proposal decks as directed by the Creative Director.  Consistently creates designs that are on strategy and reflect the brand’s personality. Monitors projects through all phases of production, adhering to budgets and time constraints.

 

3. Collaboration:  Provides input, direction, and communication to all involved disciplines throughout the production, including but not limited to digital artist, photographer, illustrator, editor, producer, etc.   Addresses feedback respectfully.  Works cohesively and collaboratively in a team environment with a sense of urgency to meet deadlines on multiple projects moving in tandem.  Mentors young art directors and designers.

 

4. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:  Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from a four-year college or university and seven years of related professional work experience to include the ability to press check, and a solid understanding of the following processing: the printing process, photography, illustration, and typography. Must have in-depth working experience with Macintosh OS, and working knowledge of the following software applications: Adobe CS5 Suite: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, Bridge, After Effects, Dreamweaver, and Premiere. 

 

Any equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.

 

Preferred qualifications:  Experience working with the following software applications: Premiere Pro, After Effects, HTML, Word, Keynote, Garage Band, SoundEdit, iMovie, or FormZ.

 

Knowledge of:  Press checks and a solid understanding of the printing process.  Sound understanding of photography, illustration, and typography.  The use and ability to work in Premiere Pro, After Effects, and HTML.  The use of Macintosh OS.  In-depth working knowledge of the following software applications: Adobe CS5 Suite: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, Bridge, After Effects, Dreamweaver, and Premiere. Basic knowledge of Word, Keynote, Garage Band, SoundEdit, iMovie, or FormZ.

 

Skill in:  Adapting to the requirements of a fast-paced environment, while maintaining strict attention to detail and quality. Possesses excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to speak effectively before clients and co-workers as well as project a professional appearance. Providing effective direction during pre-production and at photo shoots. Effectively drives and delivers on multiple assignments at one time.  Solving problems involving a number of concrete variables or “givens”. Supervision of the work of other designers while carrying a full individual workload. Articulates clear, constructive direction and input to freelance and other staff.

 

Abilities: The ability to create and maintain highly organized server and document files.  The ability to lead creatively on smaller projects with little to no supervision. The ability to shoot photography.  The ability to be proactive. The ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
